Brownsville Time Capsule

What is Brownsville Time Capsule?

In 1999, while a full-time history teacher at Brownsville Area High School and a part-time newspaper columnist for the Uniontown Herald-Standard, Glenn Tunney proposed to the newspaper's editor that he write a second weekly newspaper article to accompany his successful Glenn Tunney's Column, which had been running in the newspaper for a year.

The premise of the new series would be that in each weekly article, three or four years during the past century or so of Brownsville's history would be selected, and brief summaries of news stories that occurred in a given week during those three or four years would be presented. The items would be gleaned from archival (microfilm) issues of Brownsville's longtime daily newspaper, the Brownsville Telegraph.
For example, a Brownsville Time Capsule article published in the Herald-Standard in November 2001 might have featured news items excerpted from issues of the Brownsville Telegraph published in November 1930, November 1950, November 1970 . . . you get the idea.

Brownsville Time Capsule appeared in the Herald-Standard each week from 1999 to 2006. Glenn Tunney retired from teaching in 2006. At that time, he also retired from writing his two weekly Herald-Standard columns (Glenn Tunney's Column and Brownsville Time Capsule) so that he could devote time to other pursuits. During those eight years he had written 335 Brownsville Time Capsule weekly articles, and those are the articles that you are welcome to read here.

An additional note ... when you click the link below ("Take me to BROWNSVILLE TIME CAPSULE") you will be taken to a different web site (Rootsweb), which houses the archives of Glenn Tunney's Column as well as his Brownsville Time Capsule articles.
There you will see a photo of a much younger Glenn Tunney, as his Rootsweb page has not been updated since 2006, when the last column was written. Rootsweb, bought out years ago by Ancestry.com, is not easily updated now ... but the site is still accessible and useful to us, because all of Glenn Tunney's Herald-Standard articles (Glenn Tunney's Column and Brownsville Time Capsule) are archived there, and they are all searchable on that Rootsweb page.
So while you're at Glenn Tunney's Rootsweb page, be sure to check out the SEARCH box. You can use it to easily locate any particular name, phrase or term in any of the Glenn Tunney's Column and Brownsville Time Capsule articles as well ... searching through more than 700 articles in all.
